Agile Testing Days -Trends and future in testing 2017

Today I gave a presentation at the Agile Testing Days. The room was packed and we talked about the way the testing profession in evolving.

5 years ago the Dutch Test Association published a book that described the changes in the testing profession. I was one of the 7 authors and we organized a few workshops on the theme. Last may we hosted a retrospective workshop during which the participants evaluated the 2012 predictions. Key question during this workshop was: What is the status of the profession and what skills and role should a tester take in order to add value and a job.

In my 2017 ATD presentation I shared the results that of this workshop.  I shared the highlights of the book, told what predictions were correct and which were incorrect. But most of all I will shared the opinion of or fellow testers: What do roles do they have now, and what roles do they expect to have in 5 years from now.

Below you find the slides:

The future is now! Page 120 revisited

Earlier this year the Dutch Test association (TestNet) celebrated its 20th anniversary. Shakers and movers from the dutch test profession contributed with various sessions and workshops. One of the workshops was a follow up on the the book “set your course, future and trends in testing” (In Dutch: bepaal je koers, toekomst en trends in testing)

In this workshop Andreas PrinsHans van Loenhoud and Ard Kramer and I investigated what has changed in the 5 years since the book was published. The book made firm predictions on where the test profession would be heading and what testers would be doing in 10 years time.  The legendary page 120 shows a transition table from old testing roles to new roles that testers can perform. During this wisdom of the crowd workshop we revisited the role transition table, and made a 2017 update of p120.

Ard and I shared the results of the workshop in an article that recently has been published on the Testnet News Magazine. You can read it here: Rollen for testers-p120 herschreven

The article is in Dutch. If you speak english and want to learn more about this topic, visit my session at the Agile testing Days that will be held in Potsdam on 14 November.

Agile Testing Days Program Online

Where do we go from here? To the Agile Testing Days of course. I am proud to announce that my session is accepted for this year’s conference. During my session “Trends and Future in software testing” I will discuss trends in the testing profession. 5 years ago the Dutch Test Association published a book that described the changes in the testing profession. This month I will host a retrospective workshop together with Ard Kramer, Hans van Loenhout and Andreas Prins, 4 of the original authors. We will judge the predictions we made. On the Agile Testing Days I will share the results of this workshop, discuss the trends in testing and share the opinion of our fellow testers: What do roles do they have now, and what roles do they expect to have in 5 years from now. Join this session if you are sometimes worried about the sustainability of your role, if you want to specialise yourself but wonder what specialisms are a safe bet, if you want to stay ahead of the game and be prepared for the future.

My session is Tuesday 14 November in Potsdam Germany. You can read the full text and program on the conference website

Bepaal je koers

After the workshop Survival Techniques for Testers- Beyond the T-shape that I gave last week on the TestNet event, I got a lot of requests for the jubilee book that we (Huib Schoots, Hans van Loenhoud, Derk-Jan de Grood,  Anko Tijman, Pepijn Vorst, Andreas Prins, Jeroen Rosink en Ard Kramer) wrote a few years ago.
In my workshop I referred to the book, because it’s still relevant today. I notice that there is a growing group of testers that want (or need) to re-orientate themselves. I have good news and bad news for those that came to our boot to ask for a copy of the book.

The bad news first, we ran out of copies.
The good news is, you can download the epub (in dutch) for free, just click the button below:

Sharing the 4th lesson of Test Automation on the Test Automation Day

Thursday 18 June the Test Automation Day will be held in the WTC Rotterdam. Together with Ard Kramer I will present the 4th lesson of test automation on the Test Automation Day. The presentation will be our experience story on the implementation of automation within organisations.

The 4th lesson, you might think?
What are the first three lessons?

Especially for this occasion I dedicated my 15th edition of G(r)ood testing to this topic. You can read this column on the EuroSTAR community pages: G(r)ood testing 15: the 3+1 lessons of test automation. But you can watch the video also:

What a day…

Yesterday the Dutch testing conference was held. I spoke with a lot of people, got some new ideas and exchanged experiences. My Colleague Egbert Bouman was nominated for the DTC excellence award and I got to do a nice presentation wit Ard Kramer. The room was full, with people standing in the back. But they kept smiling throughout the presentation.

Ard and I discussed the approach we took in implementing Test Automation at Delta Lloyd. Earlier that day I heard a test-expert claim to have a wide experience in test automation. He referred to various tools and test types he had been involved in. A nice contrast, because in our presentation we conclude that for the successful implementation, we reduced our focus on the tools. Rather than discussing tool selections, whether to use Selenium of QTP. We learned to have a lean process and got more eye for the people instead…they determine the success in great extend.

In this experience story, we shared some of the success and the pitfalls. If you want to learn more, check the slides below:
